Montreal’s Italian Week festival is proud to present to you one of the most famous operas of Mascagni, Cavalleria Rusticana. Adapted from the book of the same title written by the Sicilian author Giovanni Verga, this one-act lyrical drama depicts with passion the love and ultimately tragic tribulations of young Sicilian villagers in the nineteenth century. It is the story of Turiddu, when returning home from the military, finds out that his fiancée is now the spouse of Alfio. To make his unfaithful ex suffer, the young man seduces Santuzza, a young peasant. However, the old lovers find each other back and Turiddu maintains a double game. When the jealous Santuzza finds out, the fatality soon hits the instable lover.
