Montreal, July 28 2008- The15th edition of Montreal’s Italian Week transports you back to the Middle Ages with a performance by the Sbandieratori dei Borghi e Sestieri Fiorentini, a group of flag throwers from Tuscany, Italy, who reenact an ancient military practice that symbolizes both civic pride and civic duty. Come admire this eye-catching Florentine tradition on August 11that Ouellet Park, Lasalle and then on August 15th,16th and 17th in Little Italy.
The art of flag throwing was common amongst the communal troops of Florence in the Middle and Humanist Ages: the flag was a symbol of civic pride and a point of reference in combat. It served as a means to signal an enemy’s oncoming attack and the need for a counterattack. The beauty of this performance will captivate young and old, who will get the chance to travel back in time, even if just for a brief moment.
The Sbandieratori dei Borghi e Sestieri Fiorentini group come directly from Florence and boast more than 100 flag throwing performances around the world. This ceremonial exhibition is an opportunity to reinforce values such as discipline, obligation, determination and team spirit.
The event is free and will take place on August 11th at Ouellet Park, located in the Lasalle district. Repeat performances will be held on August 15th, 16th and 17th in Little Italy.
