Montreal, July 30th 2007 - Come and appreciate the diversity of Italian culture in all its forms, and share in the pride and passion of the Italian community in Montreal. This year the region of Sicily is being featured, with numerous activities and events highlighting the tastes and traditions of the island. Whether you’re a music aficionado or a theatre buff, Montreal’s Italian Week has a little something to cater to everyone’s tastes.
The Trinacria Theatre Group, in association with Montreal’s Italian Week, is proud to present their production of Eduardo De Filippo’s three act comedy, Uomo e galantuomo. This piece tells the story of the rich Alberto, who falls in love with the beautiful Bice, without knowing anything about her, not even her last name! When he learns that she is pregnant, he decides to marry her, only to find out that she is already the wife of the count Carlo Tolentano. In order to protect Bice’s honor and defend his love for her, Alberto decides the best solution is to fake madness. His crazy behavior launches the characters into a whole slew of comical misfortunes, eventually landing them in the care of the police.
The Arcadia Saxophone Quartet is a well-established chamber music group from Sicily, with a varied repertoire incorporating everything from baroque to contemporary music. In 2006 they met the members of the Nelligan Saxophone Quartet from Quebec, and the two groups started performing together soon after. Their program for Montreal’s Italian Week includes a number of compositions and arrangements of Sicilian songs, written for them by Italian composers. The eight saxophonists from two different nationalities come together to create a unique blend of Sicilian and Canadian culture, reflecting the atmosphere of the festival and the Italian-Canadian community of our city.
